1. Your brain starts working better

When you start learning a new language, no matter which one, your brain functions will start to develop and your thinking will improve. Now, this is not just my subjective opinion.

This is a proven fact, confirmed by many studies from researchers and intellectuals around the globe.

Here is an example of the research done in the Netherlands. If you got time on your hands, here is the PDF Research Document.

When you get your hands dirty with a new foreign language, your brain will get challenged with new things which will make it bigger and stronger. Your cognitive processing skills will improve as well, and you will become more creative when it comes to problem-solving.

What do you say about that? Picking up a new language will make your brain stronger and smarter. I am not saying it is going to make you the next Einstein, but who wants to be a genius anyway?

2. Your memory gets stronger

Not only a new foreign language makes your brain and thinking better, it also makes your memory stronger. When you learn a new language, you must learn and memorize completely new words, grammar rules and concepts that are much different than in your native language.

This challenges your brain and memory muscles and makes them grow. Who doesn’t need a better memory? Imagine you will be able to retain new information better, not just when learning a new language but in other aspects of life as well.

This activity also decreases your chances to develop some scary diseases like Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

This Research Study will give you some more information on this topic.

With a new language under your belt, you will be able to avoid forgetting about all the lovely experiences in your life when you get older. This reason alone makes learning new languages worth it.

Biological benefits of learning foreign languages, that will improve your brain, are truly amazing. Along these benefits, you will also experience some extraordinary psychological benefits.

3. Enriches your View of the World

When you learn a new language, you don’t just learn the words and the dry grammar rules of the language. You immerse yourself in a whole new world of phrases, jokes, (even swearwords) cultural references, history and culture.

This will definitely change the way you view the world around you. This change will be positive, I assure you.

Every foreign language is like a new world that you discover when you start your language journey. A language is a reflection of the people that are using it. When you learn a language, you also start to understand the way how the people think and view the world from their perspective.

Have you ever been reading some weird news that is coming from a distant country, about a situation that would never happen in your country? Here is an example for you:

Famous Bull Runs in Spain:

This is a very popular event in Spain, where people voluntarily go in a track and start running away from aggressive bulls. A lot of people in Spain do this. It seems insane, right? Why would a sane person do that? And there is no real prize, they do it for fun.

This looks crazy and idiotic at first, but when you learn that a bull is a very important animal in the Spanish culture, and it has a lot of meaning throughout the history of the whole country, it makes sense. People don’t seem to be crazy anymore, they are just honoring a tradition that has been around for centuries.

There are a ton of examples like this in the world. When you pick up a language, the cultural insights you will gain, is one of the biggest benefits of learning foreign languages.

Your view on the world will become deeper, broader and much better in my humble opinion.

4. Better cultural understanding

By studying a new foreign language, you will learn a lot about the culture and traditions of native speakers. If you want to reach fluency, you can’t avoid it.

I can assure you that understanding new cultures and viewpoints from other people that are not like you is a great thing. It is one of my favorite benefits of learning foreign languages. I love to understand traditions and ways of thinking that are completely different from yours. And you will love it too! I guarantee it!

This will open up many new avenues in life which you will be eager to explore. You will learn about new food, music, movies, literature etc. It will change the way you look at the world and life in general.

From all that cultural exploration, you will probably find something that you love, and it will become part of your daily life.

You will also understand foreign people better, meet a ton of interesting people that will become a part of your life. You might even pick up a few lifelong friends during your language adventure.

5. Opens up new career opportunities

Learning languages is not only fun and games. When you become fluent in another language, it can actually improve your career potential and financial situation.

We live in a globally connected world. Most companies have a multinational workforce, where you work with people from all over the globe. If you live in Europe, you are aware how learning a foreign language can be beneficial. It allows you to move and live in different European countries.

You can end up working and living in amazing cities like Berlin, Paris or Barcelona.

Knowing just one foreign language proficiently makes you stand out from the crowd. It helps you get hired or even get that promotion. It also helps you forge stronger work relationship internationally.

Imagine you work in Paris, but for a German company. Most of your higher management is German, and you usually communicate in English. If you had learned German and you speak to your colleagues in their native language, that would make them like you and respect you more.

This might lead to a new position in the company or even something better. It doesn’t have to benefit you strictly professionally in terms of better job prospects but speaking with your international colleagues in their native language can also lead to high quality work relationships.

You will get along better, have a great time during your business travels, and your work life will become much more fun and meaningful.
